Excavation of a Viking Age settlement produced evidence of iron smelting and smithing

site exemplifies the challenge of distinguishing some slag types from lava (see analysis
tables) . Analyses of the slags indicated very efficient iron smelting using tapping
furnaces, producing phosphorus free iron.
