Samples of ores, slags, high metal slags, metal samples have been analysed principally by optical and scanning electron microscopy.  Some analyses of rare earths has also been undertaken.

The results demonstrate that:

There is no regional fingerprint based on the major and minor elements

The REE’s show variation within one site.

There is a clear progression in technology from the First Monastic Period, the Dissolution Period and the Blast Furnace Period.
