Archaeometallurgy
My interest in early medieval iron began with the study of the Anglo-Scandinavian iron assemblage from Coppergate, York (McDonnell 199*). There is a clear dichotomy between the extensive knowledge of the smithing technology with the poor knowledge of smelting sites and technology. The smiths display exceptional skills, including the manipulation of high carbon steels derived from cast iron (Mack et al 2001)
